Uses of Non-metals

Used to manufacture of matches. The head of safety matches are made of an oxidizing agent such as potassium chlorate, mixed with sulfur, fillers and glass powder.

  • The most abundant non - metal in the earth's crust is oxygen, which constitutes about 50% of the earth's crust. The next abudant non- metal is silicon which constitutes about 26% of the earth's crust.
  • Sulphur is used in vulcanization of rubber, as fungicide and in manufacture of dyes, gun powder etc.
  • Chlorine is used as water disinfectant and in the manufacture of pesticides like Grammaxene.
  • Phosphorus is necessary for plant and animals growth and development combined with other elements, it is found in teeth, bones and other parts of body.
  •  A paste of iodine in petroleum jelly is used as pain reliever under the name Iodex
  • Hydrogen:

         1.    Used for making fertilisers by ammonia

         2.    Liquid Hydrogen is used as fuel in spaceships

    Carbon:

         1.    Diamond is used as a gem, and for cutting glass.
